102!

This past Friday, we had the honor of celebrating a great man, Doc Joe’s 102nd birthday. Let me tell you a little about Grandpa Joe, Grandpa Joe is Michael’s Grandfather and I have pretty much adopted him as my own, and he has pretty much adopted me as well, he likes to call me his Pixie.

Doc Joe is one remarkable man, he is an incredible father, husband, grandfather, friend to many, and Doc to all those in need. Ol’ Doc was a founding physician in the local medical community, one of only two practicing physicians at the time.  When penicillin was still a new “wonder drug” he was the first Doctor to bring it to town, he actually had it flown in on a helicopter to save a women’s life, which in turn saved many others lives and became a staple.  Grandpa worked back in the day when you could see a Doctor for a $1.00 or a dozen eggs, when house calls were the norm and insurance didn’t exist.  He helped both those that could afford to pay and those who could not.  Delivering many lives into this world, he cared for not only them, but their children, and even grandchildren. Everywhere you go in Boulder, you are bound to meet someone who was treated by Grandpa, delivered by Grandpa, or my favorites saved by Grandpa.  It is pretty awesome to see how one man has directly affected so many lives! To say he is a remarkable man is a gross understatement, he is one of a kind and I am truly blessed to not only know Grandpa Joe, (or as our kids call him, GG JOE) but be loved by him as well.

I always ask him what advice he may have for us young folks and this is what he always says……

“Be Nice to One Another” and for the record he has been saying this longer than Ellen. 🙂 But hey, it’s good advice!

“Always be thinking”

“Never go to bed mad!”

“Take care of yourself and be NICE to yourself.”
