I have been meaning to sit down and share Mayzel’s birth story for months now. Not going to lie, it was a lot. With the first two kids, everything was pretty uneventful, we had scheduled C-Sections (Kenzie was Frank Breach and Hutton’s head was too big) so we knew exactly what was up. And being that I had only had C-sections, that recovery was all I knew. Also being that they were less than two years apart it remembered it all. With Mayzel everything was different. I think having had a miscarriage, almost put me on guard, I never let myself get too excited, I was always just trying to get to the next appointment and I was a little detached for fear of if something went wrong. Early on, we feared I had a Placenta Accreta and it became clear that the pregnancy was high risk, eventually learned that it was not an accreta rather it was a thin uterine window, which basically means my uterus was so thin it was feared that it could rupture. So not only was I dealing with a stressful pregnancy, we were in the midst of a global pandemic.
Mayzel was born in July, when we were having a rise in numbers. Luckily Michael was able to be with me in the hospital, and though it was hard not having family it was nice for the two of us to focus on Mayzel and bond with her. Mayzel was another planned C Section, though the day was not at all they way we had planned it. My C-section got pushed because the hospital was dealing with a few emergencies. A few hours later we finally got into the operating room. We had the dream team with Dr. Ghozland and our dear friend Nurse Tammie made sure we were all set up at St. Johns in Santa Monica. Once we got started, it was all going good and we met our angel baby. While Michael was with Mayzel, I noticed that things were taking longer than usual and I felt a little different. Because of my ultra thin uterus, I encountered a lot of blood loss and it took a while to get it under control. But they did and everything was fine. But I had lost almost half my blood supply so I was severely anemic and very weak. Thank God for my rock, Michael who stepped up and took care of Mayzel when I was so weak I could barely move. We ended up staying an extra day, thanks to the amazing nurses and Michael for talking me into it. I felt guilty from being away from the kids but I knew it did me no good to go home only to have to return to the ER for a blood transfusion, like I said I was SEVERELY anemic.
Eventually I got to go home and we first went to get the kiddos. It was so surreal picking them up and driving home as a family of 5! This ride hasn’t necessarily been smooth sailing, there has definitely been some bumps but I must say that LIFE has never been sweeter. Mayzel completes our family and she has brought us all so close.
Here are some pics from our adventures.
My first time meeting Mayzel. It was the first time I was able to do skin to skin in the OR and it was amazing.
Snuggles! Still feeling weak but happy to be home.
